A Start Removed from his Media Rant, Jake Odorizzi exits his Outing Early with Right Foot Discomfort

Nearly a week ago, Astros starter Jake Odorizzi voiced his frustration with the coaching staff to the media. “I had good stuff. I had 66 pitches through five innings. I don't really know what needs to be said more than that,” Odorizzi expressed angrily after his outing against the Seattle Mariners.

Tonight, Odorizzi’s outing wasn’t as lengthy but unlike his last start when Astros’ manager Dusty Baker made the decision to remove Odorizzi after five innings, the choice wasn’t on Dusty tonight. The choice was really on the Astros’ trainer but he wasn’t given much of a choice either as Odorizzi was grimacing after throwing a warm-up pitch.

The injury came after a 3-1 putout in the second inning. First baseman Yuli Gurriel fielded a ball that he then flipped to Odorizzi who was racing Nick Solak to the base. Solak’s sprint speed is 29.0 feet per second which is one foot per second under the elite sprint speed threshold. Solak’s average 90-feet sprint time is ranked 66th in all of baseball at 3.89 seconds so Odorizzi had to get the burners going to get Solak out. The race was close but there didn't appear to be any contact between the two players.

Cristian Javier relieved Odorizzi in the second inning and ended his night going two-and-two-thirds innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out six.
